A335 P91 – Special Alloy Steel for High Temperature Application in Power Plants

A335 P91

A335 P91 is a mixture of 9 % Chromium and 1 % Molybdenum compared to 2.5 % Chromium in the next best P22 grade. Chromium improves high temperature strength and increases oxidation resistance of P91 Material. Molybdenum increases the creep resistance of SA335 P91. Also present are smaller quantities of Nickel and Manganese which increase the hardenability of ASTM A335 P91. P91 Welding chromium-molybdenum steel is major material which is used in power plants. Today power plants use a modified 9Cr-1Mo-V (P91).

A335 P91 is formed by normalizing at 1050 °C, air cooling down to 200 °C. It is then tempered by heating to 760 °C. The temperatures and the cooling rates are very important for P91 material.

Chromium-molybdenum steel grade P91 is a major construction material in these plants and there are particular methods for welding it properly to insure it will hold up. 

P91 – To reduce the number of welding and brazing procedure qualifications required base metals have been assigned P-Numbers by the ASME BPVC.  Ferrous metals which have specified impact test requirements have been assigned Group Numbers within P-Numbers.

Application

The material P91 is especially suited for steam boiler, boiler parts, boiler drum, pressure vessel for the apparatus engineering and similar purposes. It can be used in permanent operation with wall temperatures up to about 650 °C (1202 °F).

ASME B31.3, Table 331.1.1 (Requirements for Heat Treatment) specifies a maximum Brinell Hardness value of 241 for P5B materials (which P91 grade material is) following PWHT.  PWHT is required for all P5B materials if your code of construction is any of the ASME codes.

After PWHT, the weld hardness should be in the range of 200 to 275. Hardness up to 300 Brinnell may be accepted, but any hardness over 300 is an indication of inadequate PWHT. SMAW and SAW weld metal will exhibit higher hardness when compared to GTAW and FCAW. Hardness below 175 indicates overheating of the joint, and such joints should either be replaced or the part should be normalized and tempered.

P91 Material Welding Procedure

There are particular methods for welding it properly to insure it will hold up. Welding A335 P91 generally requires preheating the joint, maintaining interpass temperatures, hydrogen bakes, and postweld heat treatment (PWHT). Preheating, typically to 400 to 500 degrees F, drives off moisture and thereby reduces hydrogen. Welding is one process that is widely used during the construction. This affects the microstructure. Preheating, maintaining inter-pass temperatures, and post-weld heat treatment procedures are very critical for P91 grade. For thick walle d pipes, the use of an induction heating system is the best method.

Welding P91 generally requires preheating the joint, maintaining interpass temperatures, hydrogen bakes, and postweld heat treatment (PWHT). Preheating, typically to 400 to 500 degrees F, drives off moisture and thereby reduces hydrogen. Hydrogen embrittlement can lead to cold cracking of the finished weld. For this same reason, hydrogen bakes are recommended for P91 if a weld cools to ambient temperature before PWHT.

The performance of Grade 91 welds depends entirely on having the correct chemical analysis in the weld metal; therefore, it is highly recommended that filler metals be purchased with test reports showing actual chemical analysis for the specific heat/lot combination that one has purchased.

P91 material can be hot bent using furnace heating or induction heating between 1600°F and 2000°F, but we should use the low end between this range for better result. For hot bent of these A335 P91 Pipes can use full-furnace normalizing heat treatment at 1900 to 1950°F for 25-30 minutes per inch of wall thickness, air cooled to below 200°F and tempered in the PWHT range of 1375 to 1425°F for 1 hour per inch of thickness. While Cold bent of SA335 P91 Pipe should apply a stress-relieving heat treatment at the above tempering temperature for 15 minutes per inch of wall thickness.

Alloy Steel Types, Properties and Uses

Alloy steel is a steel that has had small amounts of one or more alloying elements (other than carbon) such as such as chromium, manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper and aluminum added. Nickel is an important alloying addition to low-alloy steels. Alloy steels grade P91 is mainly used for power industry. Many of industry are depend on Alloy Steel because of their economical cost, wide availability, ease of processing, and good mechanical properties.

Alloy steels are generally more responsive to heat and mechanical treatments than carbon steels. For welded construction, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code limits the carbon content to less than 0.35%. Alloy Steel is strong, tough and wear resistant and also has vastly improved hot hardness over regular carbon steel. HSLA stands for high-strength low-alloy steel.

Alloy steel is ideally suited for applications that require higher strength, improved toughness or better wear resistance than standard carbon steel grades. Alloy Steels are used in boiler construction because they are inexpensive, readily available, easily formed and welded to the desired shape and, within the broad limits, are oxidation- and corrosion-resistant enough to provide satisfactory service for many years to many industries.

Alloy Steel is used across a range of highly demanding applications within the aerospace and power (nuclear) industries. Alloy Steel is also found in applications where its response to magnetism is important, in transformers and electric motors for example.

It is the addition of other elements that makes Alloy Steel extra strong. The elements such as silicon and manganese through heat treatment makes Alloy Steel with improved characteristics and additional benefits, such as increased corrosion resistance or improved weldability. The mechanical properties achievable are dependent on the addition of elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium.

There are 5 five alloys (mentioned in above table) cover probably 85% to 90% of the steels used of the many acceptable grades listed in the Code. There are others that may find specific applications, for example 1/2 Chromium-1/2 Molybdenum alloy SA213 T-2, 9 Chromium-1 Molybdenum alloy SA213 T-9, and corrosion-resistant, high-temperature alloys of nickel and chromium, SB-407.

15CDV6 Alloy Steel 15CDV6 is a low carbon steel with very good yield strength. It also has very good toughness and excellent weldability. Welding can be achieved without subsequent heat treatment and with negligible loss of properties.
300M Alloy Steel 300M is a low alloy, vacuum melted, steel of very high strength. Essentially it is a modified AISI 4340 steel with silicon, vanadium and slightly greater carbon and molybdenum content than 4340. 300M has a very good combination of strength (1900-2100 MPA after final heat treatment), toughness, fatigue strength and good ductility. 300M is a through hardening alloy.
4130 Alloy Steel Bar & Tube 4130 is a through hardening low alloy steel containing molybdenum and chromium as strengthening agents. 4130 responds well to nitriding for very good wear and abrasion resistance.
